Prepositional Phrase:
Begins with a preposition and ends right before the verb. Examples of prepositional phrases are underlined below:
  • The old book with the worn out cover was read many times.
  • ​The ring in the store front window is very pretty. 

 Eliminate the prepositional phrase to help identify the subject:
  • The list of books (is/are) very important.
    • The list is very important.
    • The subject (list) is singular so the verb (is) should also be singular.

  • My grades in physics (has/have) been improving.
    • My grades have been improving.
    • The subject (grades) is plural so the verb (have) should also be plural.
       
  • The noise from the fireworks (was/were) frightening my dog.
    • The noise was frightening my dog.
    • The subject (noise) is singular so the verb (was) should also be singular.
